Dr. Cara Cuite, Associate Extension Specialist/Professor in the Department of Human Ecology, is usually very busy teaching Research Methods in Human Ecology or researching student food insecurity. But this past December Dr. Cuite was busy attending, not one, but two award ceremonies recognizing the achievements of her teaching, service and research.
Dr. Cuite won the SEBS Teaching Excellence Award for her teaching in and outside the classroom. Chair Rachael Shwom nominated Dr. Cuite stating “Dr. Cuite has consistently provided Rutgers University students, particularly Environmental Policy Institutions and Behavior majors, novel, creative, and effective opportunities to learn. She has taken many trainings on active learning and has trained others in how to use these techniques to make classes engaging and effective for students.”
Along with her colleague Dr. Stephanie Brescia, Dr. Cuite was also awarded the Rutgers University Equity and Inclusion’s Torchbearer Award, which “honors leaders in promoting diversity, inclusion, equity, and access at Rutgers through their academic research, teaching, community engagement and/or workplace engagement, program development, and leadership.” Drs. Cuite and Brescia were nominated by Dr. Crystal Bedley of the Tyler Clementi Center for Diversity Education and Bias Prevention for their years of research in understanding the prevalence of and developing solutions to student basic needs insecurities, such as food and housing insecurity.
