Will Murphy's plan to constantly salt the roads wreak environmental havoc? Time will tell.

"Better safe than sorry," Gov. Phil Murphy's mantra seems to go. But all that salt has environmental consequences that reach beyond the blacktop. Excess salt and brine, a combination of salt and water, can wash off the roads and into watersheds and drinking water systems... Daniel Van Abs, a Rutgers professor who has been studying the effects of road salt on environmental and public health for decades, said this problem is nothing new. "There's a long trend line in New Jersey that the amount of salt in our surface waters has been going up over the decades," Van Abs said. "It makes sense. You have a lot of roads, you have salt. You have more roads, you have more salt."
